Theodor von Heldreich

Theodor Heinrich Hermann von Heldreich (born March 3, 1822 in Dresden , † September 7, 1902 in Athens ) was a German botanist . His botanical author's abbreviation is “ Heldr. "

Life

After studying philosophy in Freiburg , Heldreich turned to botany in Montpellier and Geneva from 1837 to 1842 . In 1843 he settled in Athens, from where he went on numerous excursions. From 1849 to 1851 he lived in England and was herbarium - curator in Paris.

Heldreich was director of the Botanical Garden in Athens from 1851 . He was also the curator of the Natural History Museum at the University of Athens from 1858 to 1883 . In 1892 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Königsberg .

Honors

The plant genus Heldreichia Boiss. from the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae) has been named in his honor.
