Diaouled ar Menez ( Breton ; German: "Die Bergteufel") is a folk band from Brittany .

history

The band was founded in autumn 1971 in the west of Brittany (Basse Bretagne). The founding members were Jean-Yves le Corre (also Yann Erwan ar C'horr; accordion , vocals), Bruno le Manac'h ( Yann ar Manac'h; guitar , mandolin , bass ) and Philippe le Balp ( Fulup ar Balp; flute , Bombarde , Binioù ). Occasionally, Per Guillou, who also played wind instruments, also took part. In 1972 the Bombarde player Yann Goasdoue joined them. With him the band called themselves Diaouled ar Menez. As a result, there were several changes in the line-up. The first album, Diaouled ar Menez, was released in 1973 by ar Manac'h, ar C'horr, Goasdoue, the bomb player Mikael Sohier, the bassist Tanguy le Doré ( Tangi an Dore ), the violinist, guitarist and singer Melaine Favennec and the guest musicians Fulub ar Strat (Biniou) and Yann Fanch ar Merdy ( drums ) recorded. The album cover is provided with texts in Breton only, the singing is also Breton. Back then, musicians used the Breton versions of their names, today they use their French names.

The band was inspired by Alan Stivell , who at that time had released several albums of Breton folk and folk rock music and had become known in Western Europe.

Diaouled ar Menez released several albums. The band performed in France, including at numerous Festoù Noz and at the Paris Olympia , and gave concerts in numerous European countries, including in the German-speaking area.

The band mainly plays Breton folk dances such as gavotte , plinn and fisel . The majority of the songs are - as is usual in Breton folk music - characterized by the alternation of two singers, the alternation of vocals and instrumental parts or the interplay between two instruments. Through the driving use of guitar and bass - occasionally also the drums - in addition to the wind instruments, which are already very rhythmically played, some pieces get a rocky character.
