Richard "Dick" Duckworth (born September 14, 1882 in Manchester ; † unknown ) was an English football player who mainly played in defensive midfield and was one of the regular players in winning the first two championship titles in the history of the English record champions Manchester United .

Life

The Manchester-born Dick Duckworth emerged from the junior division of the Manchester United predecessor club Newton Heath FC and achieved in the second division season 1903/04 - at the end of which the Red Devils had to leave the promotion to the better placed Gunners because of a less scored point - the jump into the first team, although he did not get beyond one mission that season.

In the following second division season in 1904/05 , he made eight appearances in which he scored a total of six goals (more than ever again in his career) and also his only hat-trick (by English standards) in one on April 1, 1905 played home game against the later relegated Doncaster Rovers (6-0).

Also in the following season , at the end of which the long-awaited return to the first division succeeded, Duckworth was not a regular with a total of ten missions.

This changed in the top division, of all places , when he became a regular player and top performer who played a significant role in the first great epoch of Manchester United FC, which was twice English champions and FA Charity Shields between 1907/08 and 1910/11 . Winner as well as one FA Cup winner .

In December 1913, Duckworth suffered a serious knee injury that forced him to quit his sporting career.
