Richard Agee "Dick" Oxtot (born 1918 in Beaufort (South Carolina) ; † December 17, 2001 ) was an American jazz musician ( cornet , banjo , double bass , tuba , vocals, band leader) who belonged to the music scene on the San Francisco Bay .

Live and act

Oxtot grew up in San Francisco , where he learned the piano and studied music at Galileo High School. Then he discovered jazz, switched to the cornet and occasionally performed with jazz bands. In 1940 he played with Lu Watters in the Yerba Buena Jazz Band , which began the New Orleans Jazz revival in California in 1939 and to which Turk Murphy , Bob Scobey , Clancy Hayes and Bob Helm belonged at the time. Then he switched to the banjo and became a member of the Gold Coast Stompers around trombonist Bob Mielke , with whom he later played frequently.

After he had done his military service during the Second World War, he became a key figure in the revival scene from 1947; he performed with musicians from New Orleans such as Budd Johnson , Kid Ory and George Lewis . He also led the Polecats and other groups of his own, such as the Golden Age Jazz Band , with whom he recorded numerous records. In the mid-1950s he was active in Ohio with the Dixieland Rhythm Kings . At the same time he encouraged young women such as Barbara Dane, Laurie Lewis, Barbara Higbie, Terry Garthwaite, Tressa Lewis, Pamela Polland or Willow Wray to perform as a singer or instrumentalist with his band. At the beginning of 1965 there were performances and subsequent recordings with Janis Joplin .

He was known as a member of the Oakland A's Swingers in the 1970s and 1980s . Robert Crumb brought him to his Cheap Suit Serenaders . According to Tom Lord , he was involved in 22 recordings between 1950 and 1980. With Jim Goggin he published a jazz scrapbook - Dick Oxtot & Other Stuff in 1999 .
