Dick Schoon (full name: Dirk Jan Schoon ; born December 20, 1958 in IJmuiden ) is the 18th bishop of Haarlem .

Life

Education and career

Dick Schoon is a native Old Catholic and comes from the North Holland city ​​of IJmuiden in the Diocese of Haarlem. After attending grammar school in Driehuis-Velsen , he studied psychology and theology (majoring in the Old Testament) at the University of Amsterdam from 1977 to 1981 , followed by training as a priest at the Old Catholic Seminary at the University of Utrecht . He was ordained a priest in 1989. He worked as a pastor until 1992 in Amsterdam, then until 2007 in his home parish of St. Engelmundus. Then he took over pastoral care in the Amsterdam parish again . In 2004 he received his doctorate from the Free University of Amsterdam with a dissertation on the history of the Old Catholic Church in the Netherlands in the 19th century. As dean of the Diocese of Haarlem, he temporarily represented Bishop Jan Wirix in the Collegiaal Bestuur , the executive body of the Dutch Old Catholic Church.

Election and ordination as bishop

On April 19, 2008, Dick Schoon was elected by 17 of 23 votes to succeed Bishop Wirix, who died on February 29 of the same year. He received his episcopal ordination on June 29, 2008 in the Haarlem St. Bavo Church by the Archbishop of Utrecht, Joris Vercammen, with the assistance of Bishops David Hamid and Dušan Hejbal and other bishops from the Union of Utrecht and the Anglican Communion .

His motto according to Isaiah 45 : 20–22  EU is: Deus justus et salvans (“God is just and liberating”).

Episcopate

In addition to his duties as diocesan bishop, Schoon continues to work in parish pastoral care in Amsterdam. He is also a delegate of the International Bishops' Conference of the Union of Utrecht for the Old Catholic parishes in Sweden and Denmark .

Dick Schoon has been married to the Dutch theologian Lidwien van Buuren since 1985 .
