Jan Wirix , full name: Jan Lambert Wirix-Speetjens , (born October 13, 1946 in Neeroeteren , Maaseik parish , Belgium; † February 29, 2008 in Haarlem , Netherlands) was the 17th Old Catholic Bishop of Haarlem .

Life

Jan Lambert Wirix-Speetjens studied theology and philosophy at the Groot Seminarie in Liège and at the Catholic University in Leuven . He was ordained a priest on June 26, 1971 . From 1977 to 1984 he was a research fellow at the University of Ghent . In 1984 he received his doctorate with the thesis "Christian rites and symbols in dying and burial". Since 1982 he worked in the Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands as a lecturer at the seminary in Amersfoort .

On November 3, 1994 he was elected Bishop of Haarlem and consecrated on May 15, 1995 in the St. Bavo Church in Haarlem. His coat of arms says: “Mercy and Truth” ( Psalm 85.11  EU ).

In addition to scientific publications, he has published a prayer book and a volume of poetry, both of which he illustrated himself.

He was married to Christel Ruts since 1993; there are two sons from the marriage.
