Teunis Johannes Horstman (born May 3, 1927 in Utrecht ; † August 12, 2014 in Alkmaar ) was the 16th old Catholic bishop of Haarlem .

Life

Born as the son of Teunis Horstmann and Johanna Catharina van der Steen, he graduated from high school in Amersfoort and studied there at the old Catholic seminary. In 1951 he was ordained a priest and in 1953 he was employed as a pastor for the parishes of Gouda , Oudewater and Schoonhoven .

On October 8, 1953, he married the nurse Elizabeth de Groot in Aalsmeer .

In 1961 he was appointed pastor of the parish of St. Agnes in Egmond aan Zee , where he stayed until 1976. In 1971 he pleaded for the ordination of women at an international Old Catholic theological conference. But it wasn't until 1998 that the nationwide synod decided to admit women to the priesthood.

From 1976 to 1986 he had the difficult task of uniting three Utrecht parishes. After all the requirements were met, he went to Alkmaar . On October 1, 1987, the leaders of the Diocese of Haarlem elected him as its bishop. His episcopal motto was Autem in Domino gaudebo (I want to rejoice in the Lord). Health problems forced him to resign in 1994.

Teunis Horstman is the author of the little book Derp in zicht , in which he describes memories from his time in Egmond.
