Didier Pittet
Didier Pittet (born March 20, 1957 in Geneva ) is a Swiss doctor, infectiologist and epidemiologist . He is a specialist in hand hygiene and infection control.
Life
The son of an electrician and a housewife, Didier grew up in a Catholic family that was active in the Lancy parish . He stood up for the Boy Scouts, did the animation of colonies and considered becoming a priest. He attended the Geneva Collège Calvin and studied at the University of Geneva . He earned a master's degree in epidemiology and public health from the University of Iowa . He then headed the Infection Prevention and Control Department at the University Hospitals in Geneva .
Based on the formula of William Griffith, an English pharmacist at Geneva University Clinics, he made the hydroalcoholic hand disinfectant solution known internationally, which is used by nurses in many hospitals to limit nosocomial infections . He organized the donation of the patent to the World Health Organization (WHO) so that the solution can be manufactured locally and cheaply worldwide.
At the WHO he is responsible for the program “Clean Care is Safer Care”.
Awards and honors (examples)
In 1999 Didier Pittet received the Semmelweis Research Prize and the Hygiene Prize from the Rudolf Schülke Foundation. In 2005 he was awarded an honorary professorship by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University , in 2006 by the 1st Medical School of the Fu, Shanghai , and in 2013 by the University of Chengdu . In 2007 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). In 2009 he received the Hsu-Li Distinguished Lectureship in Epidemiology Award from the University of Iowa. In 2017 he received the Robert Koch Prize for his contribution to “Clean Care is Safer Care” .
He supports the experts against the COVID-19 pandemic in Switzerland .
