occupation

The Touched is a women’s film by Helma Sanders-Brahms from 1981.

action

Veronika Christoph is a daughter from a good family who suffers from the cold in her family and society. The film begins with a dream of Veronica, in which two divers fight underwater and the sounds of their breath roar in their ears. The following scenes show several episodes of her search for Jesus Christ , whom she believes she recognizes in many of her casual male acquaintances. She then gives herself to them sexually to the point of self-destruction, regardless of whether it is a magician, a foreign worker, an old man or a cripple. She believes in each of these men that she has finally found Christ in him. Her search for God also drives Veronika to attempt suicide again and again, which is why she is repeatedly admitted to a psychiatric clinic, but refuses to be sedated with medication.

production

The film was shot according to the autobiographical notes of Rita G. Elisabeth Stepanek, who plays the main role, repeats the dialogue part produced by Rita verbatim in the film, the respective partners react improvising according to the direction conception without a script.

The shooting took place in West Berlin in the winter of 1980 . You can see the Brandenburg Gate , the Reichstag building , the Berlin Philharmonic , St. Thomas Church and the Schlesisches Tor underground station .

The film, shot on Eastmancolor, had its premiere on July 15, 1981 at the Hof International Film Festival .

criticism

For the lexicon of international film , this film , made from authentic diary entries by Helma Sanders-Brahms, is a shocking, inconsistent and garish psychological study that deliberately does not leave the radically subjective standpoint of the original. The direct portrayal of a mental as well as physical border crossing causes irritation and concern at the same time.
