The Hünfeld – Wenigentaft-Mansbach railway (popularly known as "Die Bimbel") is a former branch line from Hesse to Thuringia . It was a connection between the Bebra – Fulda railway in Hünfeld and the Ulstertal Railway, which was shut down in 1952 and ran between Treischfeld and Wenigentaft across the former inner-German border .

history

The line was opened on December 1, 1906.

A double-track expansion planned in the 1930s was discontinued during the war years in 1942. The division of Germany after the Second World War led to the cessation of operations between Treischfeld and Wenigentaft in June 1945; the Wenigentaft Mans Bahnhof was right on the border to the Thuringian side.

Passenger trains still ran from Hünfeld to Treischfeld in Hessen until May 28, 1972. Freight traffic was stopped between Eiterfeld and Treischfeld on January 1, 1976 and between Hünfeld and Eiterfeld on December 31, 1991. Today the route is dismantled. The continuously paved bowling game bike path runs along the former railway line . It was largely laid out on the actual route and only runs alongside the route over a few short sections.

Vernacular

The railway was popularly known as “Die Bimbel”, as the trains were announced in the early decades by a bell on the locomotive with constant tinkling at level crossings and stops.

Buildings

The Klausmarbach Viaduct between Burghaun and Steinbach, a 32-meter-high sandstone vaulted bridge that spans the valley in five 18-meter-wide arches, is a remarkable engineering structure on the route . It was widened in 1938 by a sandstone-faced concrete structure to enable two-track construction. However, this was not implemented on other route sections.
