Railway stations in Hessen

The Hünfeld train station is the only train station in the East Hessian city of Hünfeld . From 1906 to 1991 the Hünfeld – Wenigentaft-Mansbach railway branched off from the main line, the Bebra – Fulda railway line . Several local transport lines and individual IC lines on the Frankfurt (Main) - Fulda - Bebra connection stop at the station .

history

The Hünfeld station was opened on October 1, 1866 with the opening of the second section Bad Hersfeld - Hünfeld - Fulda of the Bebra - Fulda railway.

On December 1, 1906, the Hünfeld – Wenigentaft – Mansbach railway was opened.

On October 28, 1944, the station was the target of a bomb attack in which 106 people died in the vicinity of the station. The division of Germany after the war led to the closure of operations between Treischfeld and Wenigentaft in 1945. Passenger traffic between Hünfeld and Treischfeld ceased on May 28, 1972. The freight was set between Hünfeld and Eiterfeld on 31 December 1991, the freight to Treischfeld already ended in 1976. Along the way, in 2007 the skittles bike trail opened.

The renovation of the station began in 2012 and was completed in March 2014. A barrier-free expansion of the platform systems and the area around the station took place. In August 2014, the station was awarded the title Station of the Year by Allianz pro Schiene in the small town station category.

Reception building

The station building of the Hünfeld train station was built in the form of classicism in 1865/66 before the Fulda – Bebra railway line opened . The building has remained unchanged in its original architecture .

Cargo handling

The goods handling building to the south is used privately today.

Locomotive shed

In 1866 a locomotive shed was built as an eaves construction made of yellowish sandstone with two tracks for locomotive stands north of the reception building. The building with arched gates on the north and south sides has arched windows coupled to the railway side and rhombic openings. At the end of the 19th century , the engine shed was expanded to include a ship for another locomotive stand and a social building. It also included a 16-meter turntable and supply facilities such as coal bans. The connection to the station was via a switch in the northern station area on track 1. The locomotive shed served as a branch of the Fulda depot, initially as accommodation for push locomotives on the main line, and after the branch line to Wenigentaft-Mansbach opened in 1906 for the locomotives used there. After 1945, one track was initially transferred to the railway maintenance office. From around the 1970s, the building was used entirely by the Hünfeld railway maintenance office. In 1994 the city of Hünfeld acquired the locomotive shed from Deutsche Bahn . In 2008 the building was rebuilt, renovated and given a new roof structure. An extension for functional and sanitary rooms replaced the former social building. On March 13, 2009, the “new” engine shed was inaugurated. The conversion was set at € 525,000, but ultimately cost € 618,000. Since then, the “Alter Lokschuppen” industrial monument has served as a multi-purpose hall and a. for flea markets , but also for cultural events such as B. Cabaret and cabaret .

Tracks and platforms

Until the line to Wenigentaft was discontinued and the barrier-free renovation of the Hünfeld train station began, it had 5 platform tracks on one house platform and two central platforms . Since the renovation, the Hünfeld train station only has the 4 tracks on the two central platforms. From the house platform, except for the platform, over which you have to go to get into the station building or into the city, and the blue and white DB sign with the number 1, nothing can be seen.

The numbering begins on the west side of the reception building.

  • Track 1 is a through track and is the main platform directly in front of the station building. It was the track for the trains to Wenigentaft . Today it is mostly dismantled and shut down.
  • Track 2 shares an island platform with track 3 . Today, a few trains stop here in the direction of Bebra / Kassel , which are being overhauled here as planned or unscheduled.
  • Track 3 is a through track and is located on the platform next to track 2. Today, the trains of the Cantus lines R5 and (occasionally) R7 in the direction of Bebra / Kassel (R5) or Bebra / Eschwege / Eichenberg / Göttingen (R7) and a few regional stops here Express and Intercity trains in the direction of Bebra.
  • Track 4 is on the second island platform and shares it with track 5. Today the cantus trains to Fulda and the occasional RE and IC trains to Frankfurt stop here .
  • Track 5 is the outermost through track of the Hünfeld train station and is located on the platform next to track 4. Here the trains in the direction of Fulda only run in the case of scheduled or unscheduled overtaking of long-distance and freight trains .

All platforms at Hünfeld station have been barrier-free since the renovation (2012–2014) .

business

Hünfeld is in the tariff area of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV). The transitional tariff of the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV) also applies to journeys in the direction of Bebra / Kassel .

Rail transport

Local traffic has been operated by cantus Verkehrsgesellschaft since the 2006/2007 timetable change on December 10, 2006 . The R5 line (Fulda – Kassel) runs every hour on the Fulda – Bebra line. There are also individual journeys on the R7 line (Fulda – Göttingen). Two regional express train pairs of the DB Regio and individual IC trains run from Bebra to Frankfurt and back in rush hour traffic. All of these trains also stop at Hünfeld station.

From the start, only local trains ran on the Hünfeld – Wenigentaft-Mansbach railway between Hünfeld, Eiterfeld, Treischfeld and Wenigentaft- Mansbach .

This comprises five bus platforms and thus replaces the old stops along Bahnhofstrasse opposite the station building. Regional and city buses run from the bus station to the surrounding towns and villages.
