Josef Moriggl (born September 12, 1879 in Campo Tures , South Tyrol ; † September 2, 1939 ibid) was a mountaineer, alpine writer and, in the 1920s, general secretary of the German and Austrian Alpine Association (DuÖAV).

Josef Moriggl studied geography at the University of Innsbruck , obtained his doctorate in 1905. phil. and then worked as a high school professor. From 1907 he worked full-time for the DÖAV in Munich, Vienna, Innsbruck and Stuttgart.

He developed the “Moriggl classification” (ME) known as the “Moriggl classification” (ME) for the Eastern Alps , which was first published in 1924 in the Guide for Alpine Hikers (2nd edition 1928) . A new division and completion of the Eastern Alps according to mountain groups became necessary, as this was no longer considered appropriate and changes in the perception of science and mountaineering have occurred in some cases. It was released as AVE in 1982.
