The Glocken von Rom is a song by the German pop singer Heike Schäfer from 1985 and at the same time her first and only hit that was able to place in the German single charts. The song was written by Bernd Sichter and Ralph Siegel , the latter is also the producer of the title.

Text and music

The Bells of Rome is a hit in 4/4 time , in which the soprano sings about the effect and meaning of the bells of Rome . The song is accompanied by an electronic organ . The refrain consists of the repeated repetition of the title with background music with individual chimes and short chimes.

The three stanzas themselves are kept short and each sketch individual aspects around the bells. This is how the first stanza describes the two thousand year history of the bells in which they could not be brought to rest:

"Two thousand years are running out
And nobody silenced them.
They tell us about everything
and also ring the bell at the last hour"

The song culminates in a description of the future in which the bells strike together for peace at the end

"One day far from today.
There will be all the bells ringing
And every note is completely different
But everyone is beating for peace"

Until the appearance of Die Glocken von Rom in 1985, Heike Schäfer was unknown in the field of pop music. At the event, it was voted second and thus placed behind the song For all of the group Wind , who took part in the Eurovision Song Contest and achieved second place there.

The Bells of Rome was released as a single together with the song Freunde by the record company Deutsche Grammophon GmbH, which specializes in classical music :

  1. The bells of Rome - 3:06
  2. Friends - 3:15

It also appeared on their debut album Liederbogen along with other hits, which were mainly written by Ralph Siegel, Bernd Augener and Rainer Pietsch .

The single came to number 39 on the German single charts on April 22, 1985 and rose to number 25 within four weeks before falling again. In total, it stayed in the charts for 14 weeks. On 29 May 1985, the song was in the ZDF hit parade with Viktor Worms as a new song presented . Apart from the German charts, however, the single could not place in other charts and at the same time remained the singer's only chart success.
