The Homecoming of Odysseus is a German silent film fun play from 1918 by Rudolf Biebrach with Henny Porten in the leading role.
action
Josepha is a landlady of the restaurant "Drei Mohren", located in the idyllic Scherding. She loves the poor mountain guide Hans Immerhofer, but only wants to marry him if he gives up his dangerous job. For her sake, he gives her the promise, but then climbs up to the top of the ghost again to pick an edelweiss for his loved one and hand it over as a token of love. That's why there is a big argument immediately after the wedding. Thereupon Josepha throws him out with a touch of helpless anger, whereupon Hans actually goes and disappears for many years.
Ten years have now passed and the landlady's daughter has become a wealthy landlady herself. During this time, a number of admirers buzzed around her, but Josepha always remained loyal to her Hans. One day, however, she gives up and agrees to answer the applicant who brings her an edelweiss from the mountain. There is also a full-bearded stranger among the suitors, and it is he who indeed pays her attention the next day with a bouquet of edelweiss: it is Hans who has finally returned home.
Production notes
The return of Odysseus was censored in October 1918 and was premiered on October 25, 1918. The three- to four-act film was originally 1390 meters long, when it was re-censored in May 1921, it was only 1291 meters. Jack Winter designed the buildings. The outdoor shots were made in and around Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
