The Princess and the Blind Blacksmith is a Czech-Slovak fairy tale film from 2018.

action

In the kingdom of the sick king

In an intro, the legend is presented of a "Kingdom of Svarog", whose king was wise and good. He owned a crown that was said to be able to grant any wish and cure any disease. King Svarog was betrayed by his closest adviser, a powerful sorcerer. Since he can only rule a kingdom if you give him the rule voluntarily, Svarog refused to hand over the rule and was cursed along with his entire kingdom.

Change of scene

The librarian from another kingdom, who tells this legend to Princess Michaela, insists that it is not a fairy tale but a true story. He tells her that her father might know where this land is and that the crown might still exist.

Change of scene

In blind Martin's forge, Martin, his neighbor Pavel and his mother Agatha are amazed that only weapons are forged, and one comes to the conclusion that Vlkan, the advisor to the seriously ill king, is behind it because he is the successor to the Want to become king and then wage war.

Change of scene

In the castle Michaela asks her father about the miracle crown, but he claims that this is just a fairy tale, which Vlkan confirms in the presence of the king. After both leave the king, Vlkan reveals to the princess in private that Svarog's kingdom actually existed and that it is cursed. He also reveals that the king even has a card that he always has with him. The princess later outwits the guards guarding the king's sick bed and sneaks inside. There she finds the map, hidden in a cavity in the scepter. Back in her room, she studies the map that shows that the kingdom of Svarog is enclosed in a mountain with a crooked top. She gets soldier's clothes and a saber and thus escapes from the castle unrecognized, contrary to her father's prohibition. After discovering the escape, Vlkan sneaks the full authority of the king with the promise to bring the daughter back. Later, in a monologue with his reflection in the mirror, he reveals his power intentions and his intention to kill the princess, as she could thwart his plans.

Change of scene

In a forest - it is winter and shortly before Christmas - Martin cuts a tree to bring it to his mother Agatha as a Christmas tree. In the courtyard he meets the arriving princess, who wants to shoe her horse and have her saber sharpened. Since blind Martin cannot recognize the princess, he behaves towards her as he does to other people. When the Princess Michaela enters the house, Agatha immediately recognizes her and provides her with the best possible food. Michaela says that she wants to move on to the crooked mountain, which Martin insists on accompanying her. Agatha can persuade both of them to sleep one more night beforehand. Worried that she might lose her son, Agatha brews a sleep-inducing tea with the help of the mandrake root . Martin notices that the tea smells different than all previous ones, but drinks it anyway, after which he falls asleep.

The next day he wakes up late to find out that the princess has already left. Martin only finds a silk handkerchief of hers in the snow. Shortly afterwards the princess's horse trots into the courtyard alone, which is a bad sign for her whereabouts. Martin then takes his luggage, an ax and the horse, tells him to take him to where it has just come from and gets on. He promises his mother to be back before Christmas.

The horse brings Martin to a place in the forest from which it doesn't want to go any further because no animal wants to get closer to the enchanted mountain. So Martin dismounts and continues on foot through the wintry cold and deep snow. He comes to a portal-like opening in the mountain and goes inside.

In the realm of the enchanted mountain

After a few steps, Martin enters another world. It is obviously summer and warm, the plants are in bloom. He meets a goblin who first wants to impress him in a hidden way. When Martin tells him that he has Buchteln with him, the sweet goblin reveals himself. Because he is caught stealing more Buchteln, he gives Martin advice as compensation. He tells Martin in rhyming sayings,

that he can only help the princess with the miraculous crown,
that an old, vicious woman lives in a gingerbread hut by the river and that he should grab her cat, but be very careful of the woman herself,
that "the crown will develop its strength".

After crossing the river, he comes to the hut of the evil woman, who is hard of hearing, but can smell him as soon as she approaches. Arriving at her hut, the woman fills two cups with "fly milk" and adds some mandrake root powder to one of them. When Martin wants to finish the mug, he can tell by the smell that it contains the sleeping pill that his mother has mixed into the tea for him. He lures the angry woman out of the house for a moment and now swaps the cups. After both have finished drinking, the woman falls into a deep sleep. When she wakes up again, she is hanging upside down over her kettle, but cannot defend herself. Martin forces the woman to say what happened to the princess. She says that she did nothing to the princess because the saber she was carrying, cut by an honest hand, cut up each of her spells and made them ineffective. She reveals that the princess is in Svarog Castle and that you will never come back from there because Svarog is cursed and everyone who sees him turns to stone. It also announces that you can get to the castle by walking over the mountain at the end of the valley. Martin then grabs the woman's cat and leaves the woman. After the woman has freed herself from her predicament, she uses the magic mirror to contact the sorcerer and "confesses" what has happened to him.

Meanwhile Martin runs to the mountain. On the way there he meets the goblin, who tries in vain to convince him to turn back. Then Martin begins to climb the mountain. Almost at the top, the sorcerer - whose identity with Vlkan is indicated by the same appearance - approaches him in the voice of the goblin, which is why he is not exposed by blind Martin. After the warlock lets Martin fall, but lets him come up gently, the warlock suggests that he, the goblin, has saved him. He claims that the kingdom is cursed as long as Svarog lives and that he must kill him to free the princess. Then the sorcerer disappears in a cloud of black smoke.

After a while, Martin reaches Svarog Castle and is unhindered into a hall with statues depicting the previously frozen people. By touching it, he also finds the frozen Princess Michaela. When he calls out loud he meets Svarog, but does not have to freeze to stone because he cannot see Svarog because of his blindness. Svarog now explains in more detail how the curse came about back then. Martin tells Svarog that he has to kill him to save everyone. Svarog is ready to die, but Martin does not have the heart to kill him with the saber. Thereupon the sorcerer appears from his black cloud of smoke and reveals that he would have triumphed completely if Martin had killed Svarog, and that he instigated him to do so as a fake goblin. After a brief trial of strength, in which the sorcerer only uses his skills moderately to torment Martin, Martin succeeds in throwing the ax into his opponent's chest. When pulling out the ax, the sorcerer transforms into a mouse, which is caught and eaten by the cat.

salvation

With the death of the warlock, the curse is broken. All the statues transform back into people. Svarog is relieved and tells that Vlkan is identical to the sorcerer. In addition, he announces that his crown has no miraculous powers, but that everything goes back to his magic powers. Everyone is allowed to express a wish out of gratitude for their salvation. Princess Michaela wishes that her father would get well again, and Martin, whose greatest wish will be guessed by Svarog, gets his eyesight and can see. In addition, Martin von Svarog is crowned his successor. As a farewell, Svarog conjures the two "a bit towards home".

Princess Michaela and Martin are now on the summer side of the rock portal, on the border of Svarog's realm. After saying goodbye to the goblin, the two of them go back through the portal into the real winter world.

Homecoming

His mother waits longingly for him in Martins' hometown. When Martin, returning home, falls around her neck, she realizes that he can see. Meanwhile, the king, Princess Michaela's father, arrives with his entourage in the village because he has actually been cured by Svarog's powers and has been looking for his daughter. When Martin is asked what he wants most, the king says that it would be his greatest wish if his daughter found a worthy husband. Here it is a good thing that Martin von Svarog was crowned his successor, because he is worthy of a princess and nothing stands in the way of a wedding.
