The rose breeder is a psychological suspense novel by Charlotte Link from the year 2000 and takes place on the island of Guernsey .

She loved Guernsey, her home, the island in the English Channel. She loved St. Peter Port, the picturesque port city on the east coast. She loved the daffodils that bloom on every side of the road in spring, loved the wild, blue hyacinth that one came across in the light-flooded, bright forests. She loved the cliff path high above the sea, especially the part that led from Pleinont Point to Petit Bôt Bay. She loved her village Le Variouf, loved her stone house, which was very high on the upper edge of the village. She even loved the wounds of the island, the ugly watchtowers of the former fortifications built by the German occupiers, the desolate "German Underground Hospital" carved in granite that the slave laborers had to build at the time, and the train stations that the Germans had had them enlarged in order to be able to transport the material for the construction of their west wall. In addition, she loved some things about this landscape, on this island, that no one saw or heard except her: memories of images and voices, of moments that were indelibly burned into her mind. content

The story takes place during the Second World War and in the present.

Desperate and overloaded with the demands of everyday life, the young teacher Franca Palmer fled from Berlin to the Channel Island of Guernsey. She finds shelter in the charming property of the older rose grower Beatrice Shaye in Le Variouf. A tender friendship soon develops between the two women. Beatrice has lived with Helene Feldmann, who was once the wife of a high German officer, for many years.

During the occupation of the Channel Islands from 1940 to 1945, Helene and her husband Erich Feldmann moved into the abandoned house of Beatrice's parents. Helene, who was bullied by her husband, clung convulsively to the then little orphaned Beatrice. Even with Erich's death in May 1945, Helene would not let go of her.

Mae had spent the occupation in her parents' house, had never lost the feeling of security and warmth. Beatrice had spent her five most important years of development in the house of a Nazi officer, she had been separated from her parents from one moment to the next, she had had a painful and dangerous relationship with a man who had to live in hiding and, above all, almost that Lost her mind, she hadn't found her family alive. When you looked at Mae, it felt like light years separated the two of them. ISBN 3-442-45283-X , page 335

After some time, Beatrice confides in the shy Franca and reports on the cruel time of the occupation, the post-war period and the community with Helene out of dislike and hatred. One day events roll over and a dead person is found. Franca and Beatrice go to look for the perpetrator together and again Beatrice is confronted with the shadows of her past.
