Johanna Rumpl, called the "Rumplhanni", earns her bread as a maid (maid) at the house builder in Öd. There she approaches his son, Simmerl, because she has one goal in mind: one day become a house farmer! She fakes him love and a pregnancy and wrests a promise of marriage from him before he goes to war in 1914 .

Overcome by ambition, Hanni tries to surprise the house builder, father of Simmerl, with a written manifesto. At the last minute he recognizes Hanni's intentions and throws her from the yard. "I Rindviech" - Hanni realizes how stupid she has done. She has her belongings fetched from the farm and tries her luck in the big city: Munich.

After a short prison sentence, 3 times 24 hours, which she had to serve because of resistance to state power, Hanni took up a position in the “Martlbräu” inn and made eyes on the landlord Ferdl. When she secretly pursues him, she discovers that Ferdl is in love with another lady. Only now is she giving Hans, the butcher's son, who works at the Martlbräu, a chance.

After Ferdl died in the war, the landlady gave the Martlbräu to the married couple Hanni and Hans and Hanni reached his destination. Landlady and "no more Deanstbot"!

In 1981 Rainer Wolffhardt filmed the story on behalf of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation as Die Rumplhanni .
