action

Anne lives secluded and alone in Bordeaux , has no friends and works in the large kitchen of a hospital, avoiding contact with colleagues. She was once married and had one child. The marriage with Marc broke up on the death of their son Theo. At work, chef Raphaël tries to start conversations with her and persuade her to meet up after work, but fails because of her emotional coldness.

Anne has been sleeping badly for some time, as she hears fluttering noises in her apartment that she cannot locate. A plumber says the noise comes from a duct behind her bedroom wall. When the noises don't stop, Anne knocks a hole in the wall. A light-colored pigeon emerges, which now begins to fly around the apartment, which Anne watches helplessly at first. With time she starts to feed the pigeon in her apartment.

Anne and her ex-husband want to visit the grave of their child. However, Marc has brought his new wife Élise with him, with whom Anne avoids any contact. Élise is pregnant and will shortly give birth to a child; Anne leaves a present at the hospital. She now agrees to sell the house where she lived with Marc and Theo. On one last visit to the house, she sinks into memories of the family time together.

An offer from Raphael to quit her job and instead work with him in a new restaurant by the sea, she refuses and indicates that he just wants to get her to bed. Raphaël is stunned by her cold feeling. Later he visits her and kisses her against her will, so that in the future she will have at least one reason to hate him.

The pigeon becomes more trusting, picks from Anne's hands and sits on her shoulder. One day when the bird seems to have disappeared and a window is open, Anne begins to cry. However, the pigeon returns. Anne gets her a bird cage, which she leaves open after a short time, as does a window in the apartment. One day she finds the pigeon dead in front of the house. She collects the remains, burns them and scattered the ashes in the sea. Shortly afterwards she visits Raphaël's new restaurant. He walks up to her and they both start talking.
