The fortune teller (polka)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fortune teller is a polka mazurka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 420). The work was performed for the first time on December 26, 1885 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein under the direction of the composer.

Remarks

The polka was put together based on motifs from the operetta Der Zigeunerbaron . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 417 , 418 , 419 , 421 and 422 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. The title comes from the operetta character Czipra , who plays an important role there as a fortune teller. Strauss used motifs from numbers 3 and 9 of the operetta score. The fortune teller appears in each of these numbers.

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 5 minutes and 29 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
