content

In South Korea, the megacities are growing rapidly, are outwardly modern and technologically advanced. However, behind the facades, behind the hectic pace of everyday life, there are still ancient traditions, rituals, myths and stories hidden. One of them is the wedding ritual. This also includes the wedding chest that the prospective groom leaves for his bride - a relic from an old time, filled with precious fabrics, which is carried through Seoul to the bride's address.

reception

The film got good reviews. The magazine Cinema praised the work of Ulrike Ottinger, which shows a "real interest in people and a sure feeling for great pictures". Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times also rated the film rather positively, describing it as a "chance to see Ottinger's amazing and calm work."

“On the trail of the elaborate customs, from which a flourishing branch of business in Korea lives, it leads into a world in which tradition and modernity merge seamlessly and where cult and industry, Eastern tradition and Western influences can hardly be separated from one another. The perspective is ethnographic, but not exotic and opens up well-founded insights into the superimposition of old and new in modern (South) Korean society. "
