the pocket philharmonic hall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The taschenphilharmonie is an orchestra founded by Peter Stangel in 2005 , which describes itself as "the smallest symphony orchestra in the world" and has so far been v. a. plays large symphonic works with minimal cast in the Munich area . The concerts usually take place in the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche of the Munich Residenz .

concept

As the smallest symphony orchestra, the taschenphilharmonie follows the tradition of the “ Association for Private Musical Performances ”, which Arnold Schönberg founded in Vienna in 1920. In this context, large orchestral works were performed with a small (chamber) ensemble. The taschenphilharmonie continues to develop this principle of chamber music symphony.

The conductor and composer Peter Stangel is responsible for setting the voices or (re) orchestrating them. This arrangement makes things audible that are lost in a large orchestra, allows concentration on the essentials and creates a remarkable level of transparency.

Vice versa, there are also new instrumentations of solo pieces for piano for the orchestra, e.g. B. the “ Children's Scenes ” by Robert Schumann or “ Children's Corner ” by Claude Debussy.

occupation

The taschenphilharmonie consists of ten to 18 musicians, depending on the work to be performed. Usually five to seven wind instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn) and five to six strings (violins 1 & 2, viola, cello, double bass) play, with harp, harmonium , piano or a trumpet or trombone as required . In order to do justice to the subtleties of the respective composition, the exact scoring varies from piece to piece.

Programs, concert series

The taschenphilharmonie sees itself as a complement to the large orchestras on the one hand, and as an extension of chamber music access to music on the other. With the free orchestra, its founder has developed new concert formats:

Adventure for the ears

In this series, works by several composers are juxtaposed, mostly those of a well-known “classic” and that of a contemporary composer. The selection of works follows the principles of sensible addition, contrasting, commenting or expansion. The orchestra also creates space for world premieres .

Hearing academy

Important works of classical music are analyzed here in terms of their work history, music history and music theory and immediately demonstrated in terms of sound and music with the entire orchestra. The various layers of the overall musical fabric of a symphony are prepared and made audible individually, their meaning and function for the overall work explained. Based on the lecture by Peter Stangel, the audience gets answers to questions like: How does the same music work at a different tempo? Why is a certain way of playing right for one composer and not for another? What are the pieces "Beyond the Notes" about? An uninterrupted concert performance rounds off the evenings. This series is organized together with the Munich Adult Education Center and the Musikhochschule .

Big music for small listeners

Embedded in a story that the conductor has written about the music and which he reads out himself, children can come into contact with demanding classical music. The motto here is: "Not everyone has to like classical music, but everyone should get the chance". Following the knowledge of the child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim that children need fairy tales, the concept of the taschenphilharmonie combines narratives with music: a story creates the framework and offers situations that are "painted out" by the following original music. Without any other (pictorial) impressions, the children are challenged to listen. The mental sections of the narrative and the pieces of music alternate and are always chosen so that they do not exceed a duration of around 3–4 minutes. The entire duration of the performance is also adapted to the attention span of children aged 4 to 9 years. Only the music of one composer is performed per concert, "so that each program forms its own world in music and language, which always offers additional information about certain times or worlds and is thus the starting point for a wide variety of further works and games".

organization

The non-profit recognized and registered association "Friends of the taschenphilharmonie eV" is the legal sponsor of the appearances and projects of the taschenphilharmonie and as such enables many of its projects.
