George Maharis

George Maharis (* 1. September 1928 in Astoria , New York as George Maharias ) is an American actor , singer and painter . As a singer he was mainly active in the 1960s.

Life

Maharis, the son of Greek immigrants, was born the first of seven children. Since childhood, he had a dream of becoming a famous singer. This was followed by training at Lee Strasberg Studios before going off-Broadway and excelling in plays by Edward Albee and Jean Genet . He was discovered by Otto Preminger , who gave him a small role in the film Exodus . This was followed by numerous appearances in films, but also mainly on television, where he became known alongside Martin Milner as the leading actor in the Route 66 series (1960 to 1963). He later had guest appearances on series such as Cobra, Take Over , Murder Is Her Hobby, or Dr. med. Marcus Welby .

A career as a singer followed in the 1960s. Overall, Maharis released several studio albums. Some songs even made it into the top 40, one landed in the top 25 ( Teach me Tonight , his most famous song). Maharis sang in a duet with Dionne Warwick and The Animals and appeared as a singer on Judy Garland's show .

In 1967 and 1974 he drew attention to himself through two scandals that made his homosexuality public. In 1973, he was one of the first male celebrities to be photographed for Playgirl .

He played with well-known stars like Anthony Quinn , Lee J. Cobb , Peter Graves , William Shatner , Drew Barrymore , Janet Leigh , Stephen Boyd , Farrah Fawcett .

In 1993 Maharis withdrew completely from show business. He now lives in New York and Beverly Hills alternately and has been an impressionist painter since 1985 .
