Dieter Bonnet

Dieter Bonnet (born May 27, 1937 in Stuttgart ; † November 29, 2016 in Bad Homburg ) was a German physicist and author .

Life

Dieter Bonnet studied at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where he received his doctorate in 1963 with a thesis on photoelectric properties of organic materials. From 1965 he worked at the Battelle Institute in Frankfurt am Main , where he developed thin-film solar cells . A pioneering achievement was the development of a cadmium telluride - cadmium sulfide - solar cell (CdTe / CdS), which established Bonnet's reputation as a pioneer of cadmium telluride technology for solar cells since 1971. The results of this team became known. Several foreign companies then started their own work in this field. When the Battelle Research Institute in Frankfurt was closed in 1993, Bonnet and employees founded the company ANTEC (Applied New Technologies) GmbH in Arnstadt . The thin-film solar cells were further developed and prepared for series production. In 2001, the world's first fully integrated production line for CdTe modules was put into operation at this plant over a length of 160 meters. Other solar industry companies settled in Arnstadt.

The company ANTEC founded by Bonnet had an eventful history. ANTEC GmbH became ANTEC Solar, which was then taken over by Wind Strom Frusta GmbH and later CTF Solar continued some of the activities. With the aim of leading CdTe technology to competitive mass production, Bonnet founded SOLARPACT eV, a global network of research and industry groups with corresponding interests. In the last part of his professional career, Bonnet worked for Roth & Rau , a company that develops devices for the production of solar cells. According to Wolfgang Palz , the company First Solar was the world market leader in cadmium tellurite solar modules in 2018, which are the most successful alongside solar cells made of crystalline silicon and are based on the development of Bonnet.

Honors

  • In 2006 Bonnet was awarded the Becquerel Prize for Photovoltaics.
  • in Arnstadt a street was named after him.
