Athletic career

As a center forward at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, the 20-year-old Dieter Buckewitz made his debut in the GDR league on matchday 10 of the 1967/68 season in the home game against Halle's FC Chemie . In the 5-1 victory for Leipzig, he also scored his only top division goal. Three days earlier, Buckewitz had played 61 minutes in the trade fair cup game against Vojvodina Novi Sad . After a poor performance with a 0-2 home defeat, the Leipzig team was eliminated from the competition. In the three following league games, coach Hans Studener Buckewitz played in attack, after which he only made three short-term appearances in the second half of the season. In the 1968/69 season Studener initially held on to his striker, but in the seven appearances in the first half of the season Buckewitz was only three times in the starting line-up and only played two league games over the full playing time. In the two trade fair cup games of 1. FC Lok against Hibernian Edinburgh (1: 3, 0: 1) Buckewitz played 46 and 31 minutes. In the second half of the season Buckewitz was no longer used in the major league.

For the 1972/73 season Buckewitz appeared at the second-rate GDR league club Chemie Böhlen , where he stayed two seasons. Mainly playing as a right winger, he played 21 of the 22 league games in the first season and scored a goal. In 1973/74 he scored two goals in 20 league games and helped BSG Chemie Böhlen to win the relay. This qualified Böhlener for the promotion round to the league, but the promotion was missed with fourth place out of five applicants. As in the league games before, in which he only played a few games, Buckewitz was only a substitute player in the promotion round in his six of eight appearances.

For the season 1974/75 Buckewitz was no longer provided for cadre of Chemie Böhlen. His move to the district division BSG activist Espenhain was mentioned among the departures . However, he was neither involved in the GDR league promotion in 1975, nor did he appear in the league squad in the following seasons.
