Athletic career

For the 1951/52 season, the 25-year-old Dieter Gradetzke, who had played several times in the Mecklenburg state team, moved from the company sports community (BSG) Lokomotive Greifswald from the third-class state class Mecklenburg to the upper division club BSG Lokomotive Stendal. There he immediately fought for a regular place as a striker, missed only four games of the 36 league games and scored eight goals. As early as September 1951, he was appointed to the 30-man squad of the so-called core team, which was supposed to prepare for the formation of a national football team. In 1952/53 Gradetzke was only absent in five of 32 point games and was again one of the successful attackers with his six goals. In the 1953/54 season he was only used in the first seven league games, scored only one goal. After Stendal had to relegate at the end of the season, Gradetzke moved to the league club SC Lokomotive Leipzig for the 1954/55 season. There he was only used on the 1st matchday as a half-left striker. After seven weeks he played again at Lok Stendal, where he played all the remaining 16 point games in the second-rate GDR league and with his nine goals made a significant contribution to the immediate return of the Stendal to the league. From the following season, GDR football was played every calendar year. In the 1956 season Gradetzke was set as a striker as usual and was only absent from one league game. His seven point game goals showed him again as a successful attacker. At the age of 31 Gradetzke started his last season as a competitive athlete in 1957. In the first half of the season, he was mostly used as a substitute in only seven point games and only scored one goal.
