Dieter Mertens (building researcher)
Dieter Mertens (born June 29, 1941 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) is a German building researcher .
Mertens first began studying art history and classical philology at the University of Cologne , but soon switched to studying architecture at the Technical University of Munich , where he graduated in 1967. Since 1970 he has been a consultant for the architecture and urban studies of Greater Greece at the German Archaeological Institute in Rome . In 1975 he received his doctorate from the Technical University of Munich under Gottfried Gruben with a thesis on the Temple of Segesta. In 1991 he became scientific director at the DAI Rome, in 2001 he became the first director of the DAI Rome; his successor was Henner von Hesberg in 2006 .
Mertens' research focus is on the architecture and urban architecture of the Greeks in southern Italy. He led large-scale excavations in Metapont , Syracuse , Paestum , Capo Soprano , Selinunt , Sybaris and Segesta .
