In his oeuvre , Villinger examines the type of paint application and the moving, relief-like surface. He works with a brush and viscous paint that is worked into the unprimed canvas from the edges to the middle. Sometimes Villinger applies so much paint that it is set in motion by gravity. Vertical color gradients arise and break through the horizontal traces of movement. The painting process remains visible on the canvas and illustrates the power of color, which is both a means of representation and an object of representation.
