Dieter Weitzel (born March 20, 1944 in Kassel ) is a German pediatrician.

Life

Weitzel studied medicine in Marburg and Mainz . After his medical assistantship in Mainz and Hanover and his license to practice medicine in 1971, he worked in the nephrological department of internal medicine at the Hanover Medical School under the direction of Jan Brod . With the gastroenterologist Peter Otto he worked his way into ultrasound diagnostics . In 1973 he moved to the Mainz University Children's Hospital under the direction of Ulrich Köttgen , later Jürgen Spranger . In the same year he succeeded in installing the first real-time ultrasound device in a children's clinic and worked on establishing the method in paediatrics. In 1978 he completed his habilitation on "Sonographic Organometry in Childhood". In 1981 he was appointed chief physician of the children's clinic at the Paulinenstift Wiesbaden . In 1983 he founded the pediatric section in the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM) together with Reinhard Schulz (Stuttgart ). In 1987 he established a comprehensive sonographic newborn screening of the hips and kidneys as a model experiment, first in Wiesbaden and the surrounding area, then also in Frankfurt am Main. The results contributed to the general introduction of sonographic hip screening in Germany. In 1989 he moved to the German Clinic for Diagnostics . Together with the pediatric gastroenterologist Stefan Bender and the neuropediatrist Jürgen Seeger, he initially set up a day clinic as a model experiment to avoid inpatient admissions for diagnostic problem cases and the chronically ill, which was later transferred to standard care. In 2005 he became an honorary member of the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine.
