Diethard Tautz

Diethard Tautz (born August 17, 1957 in Glonn ) is a German biologist, molecular geneticist and director at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön . He deals with the molecular basis of evolution and genetic processes of natural selection . As part of his doctoral thesis, he described the method used today in forensics to determine the genetic fingerprint .

Life

Tautz studied biology from 1976 to 1981 at the University of Frankfurt am Main and at the University of Tübingen . For his doctoral thesis, he conducted research as a doctoral student with Manfred Renz at the former Max Planck Institute for Biology in Tübingen and at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg and completed his doctorate in Tübingen in 1983. He then spent two years as a postdoc with Gabriel Dover in the Department of Genetics in Cambridge , England. From 1985 to 1988 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen as a postdoc with Herbert Jäckle . After completing his habilitation in molecular biology in Tübingen in 1988, he became group leader at the Institute for Genetics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1991 he was appointed professor at the Zoological Institute of the LMU Munich. In 1998 he was offered a position at the Institute for Genetics at the University of Cologne . Since 2006 Tautz has been a "Scientific Member" of the Max Planck Society and Director at the MPI for Evolutionary Biology in Plön as well as honorary professor at the University of Kiel .

Memberships

Tautz is a member of several scientific societies, from 2005 to 2006 he was President of the German Zoological Society and from 2009 to 2010 President of the Association of Biology, Biosciences and Biomedicine in Germany (VBIO). He is an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina . He is co-editor (editorial board) of various scientific journals and currently Senior Editor of "eLIFE" and Senior Editor of "Molecular Ecology".
