Dietmar von Osnabrück

Dietmar , also Dietmarus , Detmar or Thietmar (* in East Saxony ; † 1023 in Osnabrück ) was Bishop of Osnabrück from 1003 to 1022 .

Dietmar, who was born in East Saxony, studied at the Moritzstift in Magdeburg and was ordained a priest there by Archbishop Giselher . First he entered the service of the Archbishop of Mainz Willigis and was later appointed provost of the coronation monastery in Aachen by Emperor Heinrich II . From 1003 to 1023 (certain sources say until June 18, 1022) he was Bishop of Osnabrück. In 1011 he founded the collegiate monastery of St. Johann outside the Domburg on the edge of the lowlands bordering the desert to the south and laid the foundation stone for the St. John's Church. Thereby he contributed significantly to the development of the Osnabrücker Neustadt.

Dietmar is said to have written around 50 books during his life, which were kept in the cathedral library in Osnabrück after his death. Dietmar became blind some time before his death.
