Adam Heinrich Dietrich Freiherr von Bülow (* 1757 in Falkenberg , Altmark , † July 16, 1807 in Riga , Russia ) was a German military writer and publicist .

origin

He came from the noble family Bülow . His parents were Friedrich Ulrich Arwed von Bülow (1726–1791) and his wife Sophie, née Schultz (1727–1794). General Friedrich Wilhelm Bülow von Dennewitz was his older brother.

Life

Bülow served in the Prussian army from 1773 to 1786, then for a short time in the Dutch army, tried his hand at acting as director, went twice to the USA, then to England and France in 1799 and, already known for his work "Geist des neue Kriegsystem" (The Spirit of the New War System), a wandering life. As a military writer, Bülow made the distinction between strategy and tactics as well as terms that are still used today, such as B. " Base of operations " back. In 1804 he settled in Berlin. Because of severe criticism, especially of the Russian generals in the writing The Campaign of 1805 , the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. arrested on August 6, 1806 at the request of Russia and sentenced to four years imprisonment. In October 1806, shortly before the arrival of the French after the defeat of the Prussian army he had prophesied, Bülow was taken from Berlin to Kolberg against medical advice . There he wrote his last book on the teachings of Swedenborg, which he admired . Relocated to Königsberg before the end of the siege , he fled, was apprehended in Courland and died in Russian captivity on July 16, 1807 in Riga. Bülow was one of the most widely read time-critical writers at the time of Prussia's collapse, and his fate moved the public beyond his death. As a literary figure he appears in Fontane's chess von Wuthenow , and Nettelbeck also mentions him in his memoirs.
