Life

Origin and family

Born as the son of the married couple Dietrich von Velen (1591–1657) and Katharina Sophia von Wendt (1610–1647), Dietrich Anton came from the ancient Westphalian noble family von Velen . This was raised on February 14, 1667 to the imperial baron status. He was the youngest child. His sister Maria Alexandra (1636–1675) was married to Freiherr Otto Werner Waldbott von Bassenheim . His brother Hermann Matthias was officiator in Meppen.

Career and work

In 1664 Dietrich received a cathedral priest in Minden and Pope Alexander VII awarded him a cathedral canon in Münster on October 13, 1666 at the request of Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen . This became vacant after the death of Johann Heidenreich von Vörde. He did his preparatory studies at the Sorbonne in Paris . On February 10, 1667, he received the Dompräbende after he had sworn on the families Velen, Wendt, Horst and Reuschenberg . A few months later, on June 4, 1667, he was ordained a subdeacon. On March 5, 1669, the Prince-Bishop made him vice-nominee and appointed him a Privy Council , equipped with important diplomatic tasks. The family connections - Dietrich's brother Hermann was married to Margaretha von Galen (niece of the prince-bishop) - certainly played a role. After the conquest of the eastern Netherlands, the bishop gave him the Oldenzaal provost in 1673. In 1680 he received the Oblegium Averholthausen and on July 24, 1684 he became the owner of Schöneflieth Castle . His appointment as a real secret war councilor and court councilor fell on September 14, 1680. On July 1, 1699 he was elected provost of the cathedral. A dispute developed over this with the Pope, who had designated canon Wilhelm Franz Freiherr von Nesselrode for this office. Before this conflict was settled, Dietrich died on October 3, 1700 in Velen Castle .

Others

Dietrich was known as a good company - un homme de plaisier - and a passionate hunter.
