Dörner worked, among other things, in the field of artificial intelligence with the modeling and simulation of emotions, and the organization of intentions and actions. His "EMO project" became known, in which an emotional robot was programmed and simulated; the follow-up project is called " PSI ". Dörner also worked with a simulation of populations (“mice”) in which all individuals were designed according to his theory.

Dörner developed psychological theories of human action and feeling and tested them by implementing them in simulation software and compared the results with the actions of real people. For this purpose he developed the "Tanaland" experiment , with the help of which human influence in complex systems can be examined. It was about a fictional African region whose influencing factors were changed by development aid. This had the following consequences:

  1. The later implementation in software forces the development of clear theories, because only a clearly formulated theory can be implemented in software.
  2. The psychological theory can be tested and thus evaluated. In this way, incorrect or incomplete approaches are quickly exposed and a process of gradual improvement of the theory is initiated.

On the basis of his research on solving complex problems , he put forward the thesis that performance in established intelligence tests are not sufficient to successfully manage complex problem situations, but rather "operational intelligence" is necessary. In doing so, he triggered a long-standing discourse in differential psychology as to whether there is an independent ability to solve complex problems . In particular, the work of Heinz-Martin Süß has provided strong evidence against the concept of "operational intelligence".
