Heinz-Martin Süß (born October 4, 1950 in Rottweil ) is a German psychologist . Until 2016 he was professor of methodology, psychodiagnostics and evaluation research at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg .

Life

Heinz-Martin Süß completed a degree in computer science at the Technical University of Karlsruhe , which he graduated with a diploma in 1976 . He then studied psychology at the University of Friborg and obtained his diploma in 1980. From 1980 to 1983 he was a research assistant at the Psychological Institute of the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . From 1983 to 1986 he was a research assistant at the University of Marburg in the Research Center for Psychosocial and Psychosomatic Prevention and Rehabilitation (FPR). In 1987 he completed his doctorate at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) on the subject of "Evaluation of alcoholism therapy". From 1987 to 1992 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Psychology at the Free University of Berlin . From 1992 to 1994 he held a position as a research assistant at the German Institute for Distance Learning (DIFF) at the University of Tübingen . From 1994 to 1996 he was a university assistant and from 1996 to 2001 university lecturer at the Department of Psychology II at the University of Mannheim . In 1995 he completed his habilitation on “Intelligence, Knowledge and Problem Solving: Cognitive Requirements for Successful Action in Computer-Simulated Problems” at the University of Mannheim. From 2001 to 2002 he represented the professorship “Research Methods, Psychodiagnostics and Evaluation Research” at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg , which he has held since 2002. 2016 he went into the retirement .

He was a lecturer and visiting professor at various research institutions (e.g. University of Freiburg (Switzerland) , University of Basel ). Heinz-Martin Süß completed research stays at the University of Arizona in Tucson ( USA ), at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development Berlin , the University of Sydney ( Australia ) and at San Diego State University (USA).

His research focuses on academic intelligence , social intelligence , complex problem solving , working memory and executive functions , cognitive training, evaluation and method research, and psychological diagnostics .

He was involved in the development of the Berlin Intelligence Structure Test . His studies on the topic of complex problem-solving skills have made a decisive contribution to the research question of whether there is an independent, complex problem-solving skill that distinguishes it from established intelligence constructs. Heinz-Martin Süß's research on working memory led, among other things, to the formulation of the facet theory of working memory .

In his academic teaching he held events in the areas of psychological methodology, psychological diagnostics and evaluation research.

From 2002 to 2005 and from 2007 to 2008 he was head of the Psychological Institute for Psychology at the University of Magdeburg . From 2002 to 2009 he was a member of the editorial board of the trade journal Diagnostica.

He is also a reviewer for a large number of psychological journals (e.g. Diagnostica, European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Journal of Individual Differences, Psychologische Rundschau , Psychology Science Quarterly, Journal for Industrial and Organizational Psychology , Journal for Educational Psychology) and scientific organizations such as the German Research Foundation , the Swiss National Science Foundation , the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research & Development and the Nederlandse Organizatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek .
