Jürgen Guthke

Jürgen Guthke (born August 16, 1938 in Halle (Saale) ; † April 11, 2004 in Leipzig ) was a German psychologist . In the field of psychological diagnostics and differential psychology, he was one of the leading experts in the German-speaking world.

Life

Jürgen Guthke studied clinical psychology at the University of Leipzig from 1956 to 1961 . After graduating, he set up a psychological counseling center in Schönebeck (Elbe) , which he headed until 1966. He received his doctorate in 1964, and in 1971 at the age of 33 he completed his habilitation with the monograph “On the diagnosis of intellectual learning ability”, which was published in the GDR and the FRG in 1972 and received a lot of attention.

In 1978 Jürgen Guthke became professor for clinical psychology in Leipzig, after German reunification and the associated restructuring of the university, full professor for differential psychology and psychodiagnostics . In 1992 he was elected Director of the Psychology Department at Leipzig University, and in 1996 he was elected Vice Dean of the Leipzig Faculty for Biosciences, Pharmacy and Psychology.

He was chairman of the Clinical Psychology Section of the Society for Psychology of the GDR and founded the Thematic Working Group on Clinical Psychodiagnostics .

Research priorities

In addition to theories and tests for intelligence and learning diagnostics, his concept for dynamic testing, which he developed with Karl-Heinz Wiedl, is one of his main works. Clinical-psychological work on critical life events, psychosocial risk factors and performance disorders are evidence of the connection between theory and practice to which Guthke always felt particularly committed. Jürgen Guthke supervised more than 35 doctorates and supervised 6 habilitations.

Jürgen Guthke was a member of the test board of the Federation of German Psychological Associations , the Editorial Board of the Psychologische Rundschau, Diagnostica and the Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology, member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Center for the Enhancement of Learning Potential in Jerusalem and continues to be a member of the scientific advisory board of numerous specialist journals.

In 2001 he was awarded the Alfred Binet Prize of the German Society for Psychology and the Hugo Münsterberg Medal of the Professional Association of German Psychologists .
