Act

Funke's areas of expertise are thinking and problem solving . In his work on dealing with complex environments, Funke attaches great importance to making a clear recording of the problem-solving services possible. To do this, he uses computer-simulated scenarios that follow the formalism of finite automata (see finite automata ), linear structural equation models , or difference equations . He continued developing complex problems .

In numerous third-party funded projects, experimental investigations were carried out on the behavior of test persons when dealing with complex problems, which he reports on in many magazine articles, book chapters and books. In addition to normal problem-solving processes, disturbed thought processes (e.g. in schizophrenic patients) are also the subject of his work. The development of a planning training “Plan-A-Day” (www.rehacom.de), which is used in neuropsychological and psychiatric rehabilitation, is also part of this.

In addition to his work on thought psychology, Funke also works on alcoholism (co-author of the Trier alcoholism inventory) and on psychological aspects of new media.

From 2005 to 2008 he was the managing editor of the journal Psychologische Rundschau . In 2008/2009 he was selected as a Marsilius Fellow at the Heidelberg Center for Advanced Studies to strengthen interdisciplinary research. Since 2010 he has been chairman of the international "Problem Solving Expert Group" for PISA and, together with his team, has planned the framework for PISA 2012 with a focus on problem solving.
