Dietrich I. von Bilstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich I. von Bilstein , also Dietrich II. Von Gevore (* around 1202 ; † before 1245 ) was a nobleman and builder of Bilstein Castle .

His father was Heinrich II von Gevore , his mother Irmgard von Arnsberg , daughter of Count Heinrich I. von Arnsberg . After the death of his father Dietrich took over the rule. His brothers were high-ranking clergy in Cologne : Heinrich was provost of Sankt Severin , Gottfried was canon at Cologne Cathedral .

Between 1202 and 1225 he had Bilstein Castle built on the Rosenberg . Its original ancestral seat was Peperburg Castle , which was abandoned in the middle of the 12th century and is located in the Grevenbrück district a few kilometers away. After the move, the name was changed. Documents from the year 1202 and 1217 attest to the original name: Dietrich II von Gevore ( Gevore corresponds to today's fjord , which was united with Grevenbrück in the 1920s ).

After the Counts of Arnsberg, Dietrich was one of the most important aristocrats in southern Westphalia like his father and, like him, appeared several times as a witness in documents. For the first time in 1225 he was mentioned in one of Bilstein's. The document was about the transfer of ownership of a property by Theoderich to the Rumbeck monastery , as his mother and sister had lived there. Dietrich also appeared as a witness several times in the following years, for example when Hachen Castle was sold to Count Gottfried II von Arnsberg .

Dietrich was married to Mechthild von Rietberg . Their marriage resulted in at least two sons: the oldest was probably Heinrich (* before 1225; † after 1245), a younger Diedrich II († around 1255), who succeeded his father.
