Ludwig Dietrich von Breitenbuch , until 1906 von Breitenbauch (born September 1, 1871 at Ranis Castle ; † February 25, 1949 in Starnberg ) was a German major, archeologist and manor owner.

Life

He came from the Saxon-Thuringian noble family Breitenbauch , whose main line took the name Breitenbuch in 1906 . Dietrich von Breitenbuch was briefly referred to as Dietz in the family .

He was the son of Arthur von Breitenb (a) uch and Isidore nee von Wurmb from the Thuringian noble family Wurmb .

After training by private tutors at Ranis Castle, which his father owned, and in Jena , he went to the military in Charlottenburg, later to Metz. He took an active part in the First World War, in which he was promoted to major.

After the death of his father, he and his brothers inherited their father's possessions, of which Ranis Castle remained jointly owned. After returning from the war, he moved with his family to the castle, which he sold to the German Red Cross in 1940. However, he retained the right to live in the castle for life, forcibly left it after Ranis was occupied by Soviet troops in 1945 and moved to Drognitz with his son-in-law .

Dietrich von Breitenbuch was interested in antiquity and in 1926 set up a museum for prehistory at Ranis Castle, in which he later mainly exhibited his own finds from the Ilsen cave. In the following years he devoted himself increasingly to the exploration of this cave until 1931.

In 1936 he joined the NSDAP.

In 1948 Dietrich von Breitenbuch left Thuringia and moved to Lake Starnberg in Bavaria, where he died the following year.
