  • Digital Audio Broadcasting ( DAB ) is a digital transmission standard for terrestrial reception of digital radio . It is suitable for the frequency range from 30 MHz to 3 GHz and therefore also includes the distribution of radio programs via cable and satellite. DAB was developed in the EU's Eureka 147 projectbetween 1987 and 2000. The DAB standard isavailable online from the European standardization organization ETSI under the code EN 300 401 .

    Expansion goals

The official declared goal of the European Commission was to replace analog television and radio by 2012 (see analog switch-off ). This goal was not achieved.

In May / June 2006 the International Wave Conference RRC 06 met in Geneva , during which the frequencies for digital broadcasting (radio and TV) in VHF band III and in the UHF range (bands IV and V) were reorganized. As a result, the request of the Federal Republic of Germany was fully met, so that in the future two further national coverage with around 12-18 DAB or a corresponding number of DMB programs will be possible. A total of three coverages with around 18–24 programs in VHF band III and a further three coverages with also 18–24 programs in L-band (1.4 GHz) are available.

In addition, ARD DVB-T will move from VHF band III to the UHF range, which is cheaper for DVB-T . This means that for DAB / DMB in VHF band III there are four more national coverages available for around 24–36 DAB or a corresponding number of DMB programs. Overall, there is thus the possibility of around 42–63 DAB programs over seven coverages in band III and around 18–24 DAB programs over three coverages in the L band, ie a total of around 60–87 DAB programs over ten coverages or equivalent many DMB programs spread.

    Europe

    Countries with DAB operation

In France , the digitization of radio was decreed. France does not rely on DAB, but on DAB +, DRM and DMB . The first launch islands in Paris and Marseille were to be launched in mid-2010 and the entire country would gradually have DMB reception by 2015.

In Sweden , DAB is only available in the Stockholm and Gothenburg metropolitan areas. However, no further expansion is to take place.

In Denmark , the VHF switch-off initially decided on was postponed for an indefinite period in 2018.

Until now, Czech radio programs could only be received in the L-band; the aim is to convert all transmitters to band III.

In Great Britain , DAB is very successful due to a good in-house coverage, the variety of programs in connection with strong promotion by the broadcaster Digital One, the BBC and the DRDB. So far 3.5 million DAB receivers have been sold. The retail chain Dixons had taken FM radios out of sales in 2006 in order to concentrate entirely on the sale of digital receivers in the future. It has been shown there that a draft horse (in this case the BBC) can always influence the success of DAB. However, until today (2019) there is no switch-off date for FM.

In Poland only Polskie Radio broadcasts its programs digitally and until the end of 2014 the following cities were covered: Warszawa, Katowice, Szczecin, Wrocław, Łódz, Opole, Gdańsk, Kielce, Kraków, Poznań, Bydgoszcz, Koszalin, Olsztyn and Zielona Góra. From April 1, 2015, Białystok, Lublin and Rzeszów will follow. Giżycko, Kalisz, Płock and Siedlce will follow from July 1, 2016. All other regions are to be supplied nationwide by December 1, 2020.

In 2017, Norway was the first country in the world to introduce DAB technology as the new national standard and, with the exception of small local broadcasters, switched off all VHF stations during the year. However, there has been a clear decline in the number of listeners. The Fremskrittspartiet , which co- ruled in Norway, demanded the reactivation of the VHF network in 2018.

In Austria several late 2008 DAB Start islands of the operation were between January 1999 and piloted, but then reinstated for lack of success. Only DAB programs from the border station Pfänder , which supply the Lake Constance region with Bavarian and Swiss programs, were available. In May 2015, another test operation with 15 radio programs was started in Vienna, this time in the DAB + standard. However, the programs of the market leaders ORF and KroneHit are missing .

In Slovenia , the National Broadcasting Council decided in 2018 that the country's most important radio stations should cease their FM broadcasting on February 22, 2022 and broadcast their programs exclusively via DAB +.

    DAB discontinued

Finland has turned away from DAB.

The Croatian operator OiV tested DAB from the main station Sljeme near Zagreb from 1997 to 2011.
