Digital audio broadcasting in Italy
This article covers Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB +) in Italy . DAB was developed in the EU's Eureka 147 project between 1987 and 2000. The DAB standard is available online from the European standardization organization ETSI under the code EN 300 401 .
In Italy, the private broadcasters in particular are driving the DAB + expansion in the metropolitan areas. In northern Italy there is almost blanket reception of DAB +, especially in South Tyrol , Trentino , Veneto and Lombardy . In contrast, areas in southern Italy are still not covered by DAB +. In Italy, RTL 102.5 in particular is driving the DAB + expansion with Radio Italia and the Portuguese radio station Orbital. The RAI, on the other hand, only covers metropolitan areas with DAB +. The exception is South Tyrol. In the greater Rome area , the expansion is comparable to South Tyrol .

Since the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010, the Rundfunk-Anstalt Südtirol (RAS) and two private consortia and also the RAI ( Radiotelevisione Italiana ) have broadcast over 55 radio programs almost nationwide. Numerous other radio programs from Trentino can also be received in the Bolzano area.
On January 31, 2017, RAS switched completely from DAB to DAB +.
Since October 15, 2014 the "DABMEDIA" ensemble has been broadcast in the DAB + standard and on Block 10C. (Formerly Block 13A in DAB.) It is broadcast from 7 locations for almost all of South Tyrol.
On Block 12C, the "Club DAB Italia" ensemble, which consists exclusively of Italian-language programs in DAB +, broadcasts along the A22 Brenner motorway and in Merano (as in other parts of Italy). Several transmitter systems have also been installed along the A22 in Trentino and Veneto since December 2012.
Until March 2013, the RAS also operated a transmitter in the L band to investigate the propagation properties of this frequency band. The transmitter was located at the main location in Penegal and served the greater Bolzano area (approx. 26 percent of the population). The program allocation was provisional, the programs used there were moved to the VHF band and are now transmitting via block 10B.
In the Bolzano area it is possible that programs from the Trentino can also be received, which are broadcast via the Paganella transmitter on block 10A and block 12D .
