The Digul ( Indonesian Sungai Digul , formerly Dutch Digoel ) in the Indonesian province of Papua is one of the longest rivers in Western New Guinea at 525 km . It rises at an altitude of over 3000 m in the Jayawijaya Mountains , the eastern foothills of the Maoke Mountains . It flows in a south-westerly direction mostly through marshy lowlands and flows into the Arafura Sea in a delta north of Yos Sudarso Island . The settlement areas of the Makleeu-anim lie along the southern course of the river . To the east are those of the Marind-anim .
More than 30 species of fish were found in the Digul in 1982. Practically nothing is known about the rest of the fauna in the largely untouched area.
