Dino World is a children's game by game designers Flaminia Brasini , Virginio Gigli and Marco Pranzo . The game for two to four players, ages six and up, takes around 15 to 20 minutes per round. It was published by Haba in 2017 and was included on the list of recommendations for the children's game of the year critics award in 2018 .

Theme and equipment

The game is about recreating the food chain of the carnivorous dinosaurs . For this, the other players have to push dinosaur cards of different sizes from the game box in order to cover smaller dinosaur cards and eat them with them.

In addition to game instructions, the game material consists of:

Style of play

Before the game, each player receives a player chip and a set of dinosaur cards consisting of a T-Rex, two each of Spinosaurus and Dilophosaurus and four Velociraptors . The 16 Archeopteryx cards are distributed on the table (the "jungle"), but they must not touch or lie on top of each other.

The game is played in clockwise order with a starting player. The first player takes the closed game box and places it in front of him with the short, narrow side facing up; the distance to the cards on the table must be at least the width of a hand. Then he puts one of his cards on the box and pushes it from there onto the cards on display. If the dinosaur card lands on one or more cards that are smaller than they are, the dinosaur has captured prey and the player places the dinosaurs under the card as prey under his player chip while the played card remains. If, on the other hand, he lands on a larger map or if he does not hide any other map, all cards remain on the table. Cards that are pushed over the table are removed from play.

The game ends when all players have placed all of their dinosaurs. Then the captured dinosaurs are counted regardless of the size of the cards and the winner is the player who received the most cards.

Publication and reception

The game Dino World was developed by the Italian game authors Flaminia Brasini , Virginio Gigli and Marco Pranzo and was released in 2017 as a bring along game by Haba in a multilingual version in German, Dutch, French, English, Italian and Spanish. HABA published it in German as well as in English, French, Dutch and Spanish packaging. The game was included on the recommendation list for the children's game of the year critics award in 2018 .

The jury for children's game of the year described the game as follows:

"Eat or be eaten? That is the big question in this small, fine prehistoric adventure. As soon as the plump Velociraptor has thrown itself with relish on the petite Archeopteryx, it is snatched by the voluminous Dilophosaurus. However, the gigantic T-Rex has the greatest appetite. Round by round, the players choose one from their set of dinosaur cards of different sizes, in order to then nudge them from the upright game box towards the dinosaurs that are already on display. If the players act with cunning and accuracy, their prehistoric animals actually make fat prey. Because only those who end up on smaller dinosaur cards with cleverly chosen cards will end up with the fullest dinosaur stomach in the action-packed souvenir game. "

The game critic Wieland Herold described the game in his blog "With 80 games throughout the year" and sums it up: "The three Italian authors not only capture the children thematically, but above all through the clever hunting idea." He also puts it in context with other games by the authors: “ LORENZO THE GORGEOUS , MAESTRO LEONARDO , EGIZIA and brand new COIMBRA , it has to be such top-class games when Virginio Gigli and Flaminia Brasini start to find players. Somewhere it happens at least in the connoisseur or expert area. Together with Marco Pranzo, they have now for the first time developed a children's game that also deals with important characters, but as a game of skill with characters from the Cretaceous. "
