The Dion Islands ( French Îles de Dion ) are a group of small islands and reef rocks in the northern Marguerite Bay off the Fallières coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . They are 10 km southwest of Cape Alexandra on Adelaide Island .

The islands were discovered during the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908–1910) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . He named it after the French entrepreneur Albert de Dion (1856-1946), who had provided three snowmobiles and other equipment for the research trip .

The archipelago is one of the Important Bird Areas in Antarctica (IBA Ant002). It is the breeding area of the blue-eyed shark , the Adelie penguin , the spotted petrel , the Dominican gull and the sub-Antarctic skua . The emperor penguin breeding colony on Emperor Island is particularly noteworthy because it is only one of three known locations in Antarctica where this species of penguin breeds on land.
