Dionys Burckard

Dionys Burckard (* around 1540 in Bönnigheim ; † May 14, 1605 ) was a German collegiate dean and auxiliary bishop in the prince-bishopric of Speyer and titular bishop of Daulia .

Live and act

He was born the son of a businessman, his mother Apollonia was born. Rottacker. He was raised by his relative, the Speyer Auxiliary Bishop Georg Schweicker . The place of birth Bönnigheim belonged spiritually to the diocese of Speyer and was under the archdeaconate of the Speyer Guidostiftes.

Dionys Burckard entered the clergy. As a young vicar at the Allerheiligenstift Speyer he received a canonical dated June 19, 1564 at the St. Guido Abbey there . On November 22, 1578 he was elected dean here.

On August 12, 1596, he indicated to his chapter that Bishop Eberhard von Dienheim had appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Speyer despite illness and against his will and that papal confirmation as titular bishop of Daulia had already taken place. The latter is dated March 11, 1596.

Dionys Burckard was already ailing when he took office and remained ailing until his death. Nevertheless, he earned great merit in the reforms according to the Council of Trent . He gave his pen a new order, conscientiously administered the finances and was praised for his exemplary, zealous attendance at the choir . In the year 1600 it is said about him that he has not missed the Metten three times in the last seventeen years . With great skill he reorganized parish life in the monastery-owned parish of Otterstadt and appears as one of the leading Speyer reformers of his time.

In early 1605 he received a coadjutor in the person of his future successor Theobald Mansharter . Burckard died on May 14th of that year.
