Similar species
There are several very similar species, including Dioryctria schuetzeella and Dioryctria simplicella . These differ in details in the wing pattern and in their size.
distribution
The spruce cone is widespread in Europe. In the north it occurs as far as Scandinavia, in the south as far as the Mediterranean region ( Iberian Peninsula and Greece ). The species is also represented in England .
Way of life
The flight time of the moth lasts from late May to September. The species can train a second generation in warm summers. The caterpillars attack the cones, shoots and buds of various conifers, mainly those of the Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ). Other host plants are the Monterey pine ( Pinus radiata ), the Norway spruce ( Picea abies ), the noble fir ( Abies procera ), the common Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii ) and larch ( Larix ). The caterpillars overwinter in a web in the ground. The caterpillars pupate in spring . In England the species is considered a sporadic migrant. Spruce cone moths usually hatch from the resinified cones of felled spruce trees and, in smaller numbers, spruce cone moths.
