The bladder mosses ( Diphyscium ) are a genus of deciduous mosses that belong to the subclass Diphysciidae.
Surname
The name Diphyscium is derived from dis = two or dia = because of, as a result, through and physkion = tummy, small bladder and refers to the shape of the spore capsule.
features
They are perennial, dense lawn-forming mosses. The plants are about 0.5 to 1, maximum 3 centimeters in size, the stems are short and simple or forked. The stem leaves are tongue-shaped and the leaf vein ends just before or in the leaf tip. The upper leaf area is usually bilayered, the cells are roundish square. The perichetial leaves are clearly different from the stem leaves; they are enlarged, lanceolate to linear and the rib emerges as a long bristle. The almost seated spore capsule sunk into the perichetial leaves is obliquely egg-shaped.
Systematics and types
Diphyscium was part of the Buxbaumiaceae family until recently . Based on results from molecular data that disprove a close relationship, it has recently been placed as the only genus in the newly created subclass Diphysciidae Ochyra.
The genus includes 16 species worldwide. The only species found in Europe is Diphyscium foliosum , German Beblättertes bladder moss or bellows moss.
