Elizabeth Dipuo Peters (born May 13, 1960 in Kimberley , Cape Province ) is a South African politician of the African National Congress (ANC), who was Prime Minister of the North Cape Province from 2004 to 2009, Minister of Energy from 2009 to 2013 and most recently Minister of Transport between 2013 and 2017.

Life

Member of the Provincial and National Assemblies

Dipuo Peters attended Tidimalo Junior Secondary and Tshireleco Senior Secondary and then began studying social work at the University of the North , which she completed in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). Between 1987 and 1990 she was head of the women’s department of the South African Youth Congress (SAYC), a youth organization closely related to the ANC, which merged in 1990 with the official youth organization of the ANC, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL). She then became the ANCYL's secretary for women's affairs in 1990. In 1994 she became a member of the National Assembly for the ANC for the first time and was a member of this until 1997. During her parliamentary membership, she was a member of the committees for home affairs, public works, and social services and health. During this time she also completed a postgraduate course in development policy at the State University of the Western Cape , founded in 1959 , which she completed with a certificate in 1996.

After leaving the National Assembly Dipuo Peters 1997 Member of the Provincial Assembly was ( provincial legislature ) the Northern Cape and acted in this between 1997 and 1999 as Parliamentary General Manager (Chief Whip ) of the ANC faction . From 1999 to 2004 she was Health Minister in the provincial government of Prime Minister Manne Dipico as Member of the Executive Council . During this time, she completed a degree in administrative management at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Cape Town , which she completed with a certificate in 2002. She also completed another course in international political management at the University of Havana in 2002 with a certificate.

In the elections of April 14, 2004, the ANC won 21 seats in the 30-member provincial assembly and was therefore ahead of DA (3 seats), ID (2 seats), NNP (2 seats), CF + (1 seat) by a clear absolute majority and ACDP (1 seat). Dipuo Peters was then elected on April 26, 2004 to succeed Manne Dipico and sworn in on April 30, 2004. She held the office of Prime Minister until May 6, 2009, after which Hazel Jenkins became her successor.

Dipuo Peters was re-elected to the ANC on May 6, 2009 as a member of the National Assembly, in which she now represented the constituency of Noupoort until her resignation on March 31, 2017 . 10 May 2009 appointed President Jacob Zuma Dipuo in his first cabinet to the energy minister (Minister of Energy) . As part of a cabinet reshuffle, she took over the post of Minister of Transport from Ben Martins on July 9, 2013 , which she also held in the second Zuma cabinet until she resigned for health reasons on March 31, 2017.
