The Director of the National Security Agency (DIRNSA) is a government official of the United States of America and head of the US intelligence service National Security Agency (NSA), Chief of the Central Security Service , as well as Commander of the United States Cyber Command .

Requirements for appointment

Since DIRNSA also manages a military facility with the United States Cyber Command , the latter must be an officer in the armed forces of the United States of America . Usually a Lieutenant General ( Lt Gen or LTG , "3-Star General"; German  Lieutenant General ) or a Vice Admiral ( VADM ; German  Vice Admiral ) is deployed. The only DIRNSA so far who did not hold any of the aforementioned ranks when he was appointed was Major General (Maj Gen ; German  Major General ) - and thus a rank below Lieutenant General - Ralph J. Canine , the first director of the NSA. However, many NSA directors are promoted to four-star general or admiral in office.

Usually the Minister of Defense proposes a candidate. The President appoints or nominates the potential new DIRNSA, whereby the candidate does not necessarily have to be proposed by the Defense Minister, the President is sovereign in this regard . The US Senate has to confirm the nomination by a simple majority .

tasks

DIRNSA is responsible for the operational and administrative control and coordination of all activities of the National Security Agency.

In the past the DIRNSA reported to the Director of National Intelligence (DNI). By directive of the Secretary of Defense (SecDef) he was subordinated to this directly or to one of his deputies (Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, USD (I)).
