Dirk Balthaus (born July 5, 1965 in Oberhausen ) is a German jazz pianist and composer .

biography

Balthaus started playing the piano at the age of six. At the age of 15 he discovered jazz. The lessons of pianist Peter Walter from Essen and the Jazzkeller Eisenheim played an important role . In 1986 he moved to the Netherlands to study with Frans Elsen , Henk Elkerbout and Rob Madna at the Hilversum Conservatory . After completing his studies, he moved to Amsterdam , where he has lived ever since.

In 1994 he formed a quartet with Bert Lochs (trumpet / flugelhorn ), Sven Schuster (bass) and Steve Altenberg (drums) and recorded his first CD "tales of the frog". Since then he has been an active member of the European jazz scene. Other CD productions followed, including "On Children's Ground" with drummer John Engels . He played with Benny Golson , Lee Konitz , Ack van Rooyen , Frank Morgan , Benny Baily, Lew Tabackin , Dale Barlow , Clarence Becton , Herb Geller , Ben Herman, Jack Parnell , Bud Shank , Eric Vloeimans and Gerd Dudek .

Dirk Balthaus plays and composes for his piano trio, the trio Lochs / Balthaus / Herskedal , the band JuzzFlirtin and the band post-it painters ; since 2012 he has been the musical director of the singer Sietske's quintet . He is also a permanent member of Joan Reinder's Millennium Jazz Orchestra . Educational activities include classes, workshops and master classes at the conservatories of Osnabrück , Amsterdam, Arnhem , Enschede and Cluj (Romania).
