Daniel Herskedal (born April 2, 1982 in Molde ) is a Norwegian jazz musician ( tuba , composition, also bass trumpet ).

Live and act

Herskedal first started playing French horn before switching to the tuba. He received lessons at his hometown Storyville Jazz Club and high school. He performed early with the band Dixi , to study at the Trondheim Conservatory in 2002 and the trio Listen! with the pianist Espen Berg and the saxophonist Bendik Giske. After completing his bachelor's degree in 2006, he continued his studies at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. During this time he not only worked in Django Bates ' group stoRMChaser , but also became a member of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra . Together with the brass players Hayden Powell and Erik Johannessen as well as the drummer Erik Nylander he founded the quartet Magic Pocket , which presented itself at the Nattjazz and Moldejazz festivals . He also took lists with the trio ! on. His international breakthrough came after the album Neck of the Woods (2011) , released together with Marius Neset .

He is also a tuba teacher at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory . He also wrote the music for the short film The End (2008) by Bendik Kaltenborn.

Prizes and awards

In 2004, Herskedal was awarded the Jury Solo Prize at the Getxo Festival; with the band Listen! he won first prize at the Hoeillart international jazz competition. In 2008 he was recognized as a jazz talent at the Molde Festival, where he received the jazz scholarship of the year the following year with the group Magic Pocket .
